Should I take the Apartment mgnt to small claims court over carpet replacement?

We cleaned the apartment, got it steam cleaned and deodorized to get rid of "odors" they complained about that even the steam man said was non-existant. However, they are still trying to make us replace the carpet and padding. They hired some carpet man to inspect it and it supposedly showed signs of pet stains on the bottom after they tore up the carpet. However, when we came to look at the place with them....there was no smell whatsoever. Unless you were to kneel down and place your face directly on top of the carpet, you would not smell anything. we have a witness and a professional to verify that the carpet has no odor and is in good condition on the day we returned the room key. However, they wouldn't let us have someone else come in to attest that there was no odor on the day that we looked at the carpet again. I guess it would be our word against theirs. Do you think we have a shot if we take them to small claims court? The amount they charge is 686 and we do NOT intend to pay a penny of it. Thank you!
