Old Simpsons Too Serious?

Mostly season 1, recently on SKY1 they have been showing the first series. Compared to the later stuff its too serious, Mr burns crying over the statue being decapitated, homer having proper father son talks, and i don't think ive seen marge smile yet. I never noticed it when i was young, just more recently. Is it just me or does anyone else think the same?
